A picture of my kids using their metal detector.

A fun adventure with a metal detector!

I had a great idea! My kids kept asking me to buy them a metal detector. I thought to myself, “They probably won’t play with it for long, and it will just take up space in our garage.” I wanted to save money, so I remembered that our library lets you rent things. When I was a kid, they didn’t do that, but now you can borrow all kinds of stuff!

I wondered if the library had a metal detector. Guess what? They did! I could rent one! I almost rented some of the other cool things they have too. Here is the link for the Library of Things in Worcester: https://mywpl.org/?q=article/library-things

So, we rented the metal detector and went to Dean Park in Shrewsbury. First, we checked the sand pit. We found nothing. Then we tried the volleyball sand court. Still nothing! We walked all across the lawn and found... a big fat NOTHING!

The kids were getting frustrated 😣, but they didn’t give up! The next day, they went to the beach with some friends and found a coin! No treasure, gold, or silver, but at least they found something!

A week later, I happily returned the metal detector to the librarian with a big smile on my face.

If you are good at using a metal detector, send me some tips! Just hit reply to this email.

Happy hunting!

Recover without surgery using Shockwave

This week, I saw a patient in my office who had some foot pain. She went on a long hike a while ago and noticed that the inside of her foot hurt. Like many of our patients, she didn’t come in for help right away. She came to see me about 6 months later, and her foot was very swollen, with a tendon that had some small tears. We were able to see these tears using an ultrasound machine in our office.

A few years ago, this patient might have needed surgery to fix her tendon. But now we have a new treatment that helps heal the tendon without needing any surgery. I suggested that she have three sessions of shockwave therapy in the office. This treatment sends waves to the injured tendon to help it heal. It encourages blood flow to the area, which helps reduce swelling and allows the tendon to get better over time.

This treatment is a great choice because it works well and has a shorter recovery time than surgery. If she had surgery, she would need to rest for 6 to 8 weeks and wouldn’t be able to drive because it was her right foot.

Not every patient can avoid surgery, but more and more, we have treatments that help people heal without going under the knife.

What should I expect with Shockwave therapy?

What Is Shockwave Therapy for Your Foot?

If you have pain in your foot, your doctor might suggest something called shockwave treatment. This treatment can help make your foot feel better without needing to have an operation. Here’s what you can expect!

How Does It Work?

Shockwave treatment uses special sound waves. These waves go through your skin and into your foot. They help your body heal by making new blood flow to the area. This can help reduce pain and swelling.

What Happens During Treatment?

  1. Getting Ready: First, you’ll sit or lie down in a comfortable chair. Your doctor will make sure you are ready for the treatment.
  2. Feeling Some Vibration: The doctor will use a special machine that looks like a small wand. When they touch it to your foot, you might feel some vibrations. It can feel funny, but it shouldn’t hurt!
  3. Short Sessions: Each treatment usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes. You might need a few treatments to help your foot feel better.
  4. Going Home: After your treatment, you can go home and do normal things. Just remember to take it easy for a little while!

What Should You Expect Afterward?

It’s normal to feel some soreness in your foot after the treatment. This is like how your muscles feel after exercising. You can put ice on your foot if it feels uncomfortable. Most people start to feel better after a few days.

Why Choose Shockwave Treatment?

Shockwave treatment is safe and can help you get back to doing the things you love, like playing sports or running around with friends! If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your doctor.

If you think shockwave treatment might help you, talk to your doctor. They will help you decide if it’s the right choice for your foot pain!
