Pros & Cons of cortisone injections

Foot fun

What it feel like when you foot falls asleep

 What our patients say

“I consulted Dr. Matthew Monette for a severely torn Achilles tendon.”

I consulted Dr. Matthew Monette for a severely torn Achilles tendon. As the saying goes, "There is no substitute for first time impression," I must say I was greatly impressed by him as a healthcare practitioner. He patiently explained to me what was going to happen. He did not rush me, he listened to me. It was a very fulfilling conversation because he made me feel at home and treated me with respect. He is a great doctor and I strongly recommend him to those with similar health problems.

 Shockwave for plantar fasciitis?

Since we have been talking about plantar fasciitis I wanted to introduce our favorite treatment modality called Shockwave. This is a medical device that is used kind of like a defibrillator is used to jump start the heart it is used to jump start the healing of the plantar fascia.

The treatments take 10-15 minutes and are done weekly for 3-6 sessions here in the office. Then over the next 6-12 weeks your body sends more of the healing stem cells into the injured tissue to repair it.

Everyone asks if the treatment works and I tend to say that it is 85% effective and speeds up the healing by 50%. We were new to this treatment and I found this video we did on the topic that is 6 years old I thought you would enjoy seeing us all 6 years younger!

Watch the video HERE.

The struggle with changing our website around!

We recently decided to change our office website and switched from one company to another. What a hassle! Things are improving now but the day when things were moved over was really tense.

I don’t know much about websites if you are reading this and know more than me I apologize. Our old site ranked very well and when people Googled items we came up very high. When you switch websites it can cause that to lower unless you keep it similar along with something called SEO (search engine optimization).

Finally the day came where the switch happened BUT then the difficulty started.

First I didn’t realize our email was connected to our website so we needed our IT people to get on the phone and fix our emails because nothing was coming through.

Second some of our staff work remotely with a VPN connection so they can work on patient protected charts and this got messed up as well.

I was really stressed but now things are working well.

Next week I will do a little visual walk through the website so you can see the additions and give your feedback.

If you want to take a peak you can look here - www.centralmasspodiatry.com

Now, we are in the process of fixing any broken links that are not working anymore :(

Pros and Cons of cortisone injections for plantar fasciitis

Patients frequently are seen in the office or heel pain and they say, “Just give me a shot doc!” Shots or what they are referring to are cortisone injections are not always the best way to solve plantar fasciitis.

For some patients it is a band-aid solution that may last weeks to months.

Pros - The pros of cortisone is that it might work and reduce your pain. It tends to work better in joints vs plantar fascia.

Cons - There are a few downsides including the pain from the injection and possibility of having a short duration of effectiveness. That means you might need another cortisone shot or another type of treatment.

How to decide? I find that the best way to decide if you should do a cortisone injection or not is by using a diagnostic ultrasound. When using an ultrasound if there is a thickening of the fascia then Shockwave therapy is better than a shot. If it is normal thickness with some swelling around the area then a cortisone is beneficial.
